UK procurement update: seven-day notice volumes fall 12.7%

UK procurement notice volumes fell 12.7% in the seven days to 1 October 2026 compared with the immediately preceding week. Open notices and buyer participation also declined, while the four-week history shows a more uneven pattern than a sustained slowdown.

UK procurement update: seven-day notice volumes fall 12.7%

The seven days from 25 September to 1 October 2026 recorded 2,393 procurement notices, down 12.7% compared with 2,742 in the immediately preceding seven-day period. Buyer participation also eased, with 913 buyers recorded against 1,019 during 18–24 September.

For suppliers, the reduction in open notices is particularly relevant: the latest period recorded 358, compared with 488 in the preceding week. Awarded notices remained the largest status category, at 1,840, against 2,004 previously.

The four-week history places this decline in context. Overall publication volumes remain above those recorded in the first two weeks of the series, but open-notice counts are now below both earlier periods. Suppliers should therefore distinguish between general notice activity, evidence of completed procurement and opportunities that are currently open to bids.

The rolling seven-day comparison

The latest seven-day period recorded published GBP values of £20,816,528,286.54, compared with £204,705,456,995.84 in the preceding period. This is a substantial change in recorded notice value, but it should not be treated as a direct measure of available tender spend.

Published values include only GBP values supplied in notices. The total covers the recorded notice mix, including awarded activity; it is not a total for open opportunities alone. Notices without supplied GBP values are not represented in that value measure.

Other status counts also changed. Cancelled notices numbered 15, compared with 36 in the preceding seven days, while closed notices numbered 3, against 2. The supplied framework count was 0, compared with 2 previously. Framework wording in an individual opportunity title should be considered separately from that aggregate field.

For business development teams, the key distinction is between a lower publication count and a lower open-notice count. Both moved down in this comparison, making careful filtering by status more useful than relying on the headline volume alone.

Four weeks show an uneven pattern

The weekly history does not show a continuous decline in overall procurement publications.

Seven-day periodNoticesBuyersOpen noticesPublished GBP value

11–17 September 20261,987823436£61,539,036,390.19
18–24 September 20262,7421,019488£204,705,456,995.84
25 September–1 October 20262,393913358£20,816,528,286.54

Notice volumes eased in the second period, rose in the third and then fell in the latest week. Buyer counts followed the same direction. The current totals for both measures remain above the first two periods in the series.

Open notices followed a different path: they increased across the first three periods before falling to the lowest count in this four-week history. Awarded notices rose from 1,392 to 1,328, then 2,004 and 1,840 respectively only in the sense of an uneven sequence: the first movement was a decline, followed by an increase and another decline. The latest awarded count nevertheless remains above the first two weeks.

Recorded GBP values are also uneven. They increased across the first three periods before falling in the latest week. The supplied facts do not establish the cause of these movements, so they should not be attributed to particular contracts or changes in underlying demand.

Publication-day context

As secondary context, 1 October 2026 recorded 465 notices, compared with 533 on the same weekday last week: a supplied decline of 12.8%. There were 277 buyers, against 298, and published GBP values of £1,236,270,259.88, against £1,255,041,209.31.

The current day's status counts included 64 open, 366 awarded, 2 closed and 3 cancelled notices. The same weekday last week recorded 71 open, 421 awarded, 1 closed and 13 cancelled notices. These figures support the latest weekly direction, but the rolling seven-day comparison remains the primary assessment.

Sectors and buyers to monitor

In the report-day sector breakdown, Other sectors accounted for 118 notices. Among named sectors, Professional services and IT & digital each recorded 59, followed by Health & social care with 38, Construction & property with 34, and Transport with 29.

Award-related publication types featured prominently: Awarded contract notice on Contracts Finder recorded 171, while Contract details notice on Find a Tender recorded 113. There were also 44 Tender notices on Find a Tender and 21 Preliminary market engagement notices on Find a Tender. This reinforces the need to separate bidding opportunities from award information and early-stage engagement.

The leading buyers in the supplied breakdown were Innovate UK, with 24 notices, and UK RESEARCH & INNOVATION, with 11. Suffolk County Council Passenger Transport, Post Office Limited and MID CHESHIRE HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST each recorded 7. Publication frequency alone does not establish how many opportunities remain open.

Source and data quality

This report uses only the supplied verified procurement dataset dated 1 October 2026, including notice records from Find a Tender and Contracts Finder. Sector, buyer, region and notice-type breakdowns are report-day context, not seven-day totals.

Regional labels include both United Kingdom and UK, while 64 records have region Not supplied; these categories have not been merged. Status and notice-type breakdowns should not be assumed to exhaust the headline count.

Before allocating bid resources or responding to market engagement, verify the original notice, including its current status, scope, value basis, deadline, eligibility conditions and submission process.
