UK procurement: weekly notice volume falls 7.3% as published value rises

The seven days to 18 September recorded 1,985 procurement notices, down 7.3% on the preceding week, while published GBP values rose to £62,721,866,489.76. The four-week history shows a mixed picture for notice volumes, with open notices remaining above the earlier periods.

UK procurement: weekly notice volume falls 7.3% as published value rises

UK procurement notice volumes eased in the rolling seven-day period ending 18 September 2026, but published values moved sharply higher. The period recorded 1,985 notices, compared with 2,141 in the immediately preceding seven days: a 7.3% decline.

Buyer coverage moved in the opposite direction, with 863 buyers represented against 855 previously. Published GBP values reached £62,721,866,489.76, compared with £12,470,767,502.21 in the preceding period.

These measures should be read separately. Lower notice volume does not necessarily mean lower published value, while a higher value total does not establish that more live bidding opportunities are available. Published values include only GBP values supplied in notices; they are not a measure of confirmed expenditure.

The rolling seven-day comparison

The latest period, 12–18 September, contained 433 open notices, compared with 442 during 5–11 September. Awarded notices also declined, from 1,427 to 1,333, but remained the largest supplied status category.

Closed notices numbered 11, against 49 in the preceding period, while cancelled notices numbered 19, against 31. The supplied framework count was zero in both periods.

For suppliers, the distinction between publication activity and tender availability is important. The overall notice count includes award and other procurement-stage information, rather than simply invitations to submit bids. Opportunity screening should therefore consider notice type, status and deadline together.

The broader buyer coverage provides a separate signal: despite fewer notices overall, more buyers appeared in the latest seven-day period. It does not, on its own, demonstrate increased competition or wider access to contracts.

Four weeks show an uneven pattern

The four-week history places the latest movement in context:

Seven-day periodNoticesBuyersOpen noticesPublished GBP value
22–28 August1,802762209£35,654,215,385.01
29 August–4 September1,524677287£15,862,162,815.04
5–11 September2,141855442£12,470,767,502.21
12–18 September1,985863433£62,721,866,489.76

Notice volumes fell, recovered and then eased across these periods. The latest total remained above the first two weeks shown, although below the immediately preceding week.

Open notices rose across the first three periods before declining in the latest week. Their latest count remained above the earlier August and early September periods. Buyer coverage reached its highest level in the supplied four-week history.

Published value followed a different path, falling across the first three periods before rising in the latest one. The figures establish that divergence, but the supplied facts do not explain what drove the weekly value movement. It would be inappropriate to attribute it to individual notices without a supporting breakdown.

Publication-day sector and buyer activity

The 18 September snapshot recorded 438 notices from 299 buyers, with published GBP values of £4,905,362,576.01. It contained 106 open, 280 awarded and four cancelled notices, with no closed notices recorded.

Within the supplied publication-day sector breakdown, “Other sectors” accounted for 121 notices. Named categories included health and social care with 41, professional services with 29, construction and property with 27, IT and digital with 22, and transport with 19. These figures are publication-day context, not seven-day sector totals.

UK Research & Innovation led the supplied buyer list with 12 notices, followed by Surrey County Council with 10, Oxfordshire County Council with seven, Herefordshire Council with six, and Post Office Limited with five.

Notice types further illustrate the mix of procurement stages. The snapshot included 156 contract details notices, 89 tender notices, 57 contract award notices and 39 preliminary market engagement notices on Find a Tender. Suppliers should avoid treating all publication activity as an immediately actionable tender pipeline.

Five notices to review

The following supplied notices offer a mix of live tenders and early engagement. Values are those supplied in the notices, not guaranteed supplier revenue.

Security and resilience engagement

Its status is upcoming, and no deadline is supplied in the dataset. Suppliers should review the original notice for participation arrangements rather than assume bidding has opened.

Same-weekday context

As secondary context, the 18 September notice count of 438 was 0.5% below the same weekday last week, when 440 notices were recorded. Buyer coverage was 299, against 274, while open notices numbered 106, against 109.

This comparison supports the publication-day picture but does not replace the rolling seven-day assessment, which remains the primary measure of direction.

Source and data quality

This article uses only the supplied verified procurement dataset for 18 September 2026, including its four-week history and selected Find a Tender notices. Published values include only GBP values supplied in notices; no missing values or currency conversions have been added.

The recorded framework count is zero, although some notice titles describe frameworks. The aggregate classification should not be used to dismiss those notices. Similarly, an “open” status does not remove the need to check the notice type.

Before engaging or bidding, verify the original notice, its current status, deadlines, value basis, documentation and any amendments.

Highlighted opportunities

ProcuraAxis analysis uses published procurement records. Values include only amounts supplied in source notices. Always verify deadlines, eligibility and documents with the original notice.
