UK procurement: weekly notices fall 1.5% as open opportunities edge higher

UK procurement coverage recorded 2,044 notices in the rolling seven days from 10–16 October 2026, down 1.5% against 2,075 in the immediately preceding seven-day period. Buyer participation also narrowed, with 769 buyers represented compared with 813 during 3–9 October.

However, the number classified as open increased to 324 from 317. For suppliers, that distinction matters: a reduction in total publication activity does not necessarily mean fewer open opportunities in the reporting period.

Published GBP values totalled £7,385,694,940.57, compared with £47,102,718,561.014 in the preceding seven days. These totals include only GBP values supplied in notices. They should not be interpreted as expenditure incurred or as the value of contracts currently available to bid for.

Four-week direction remains lower

The four-week history shows a sustained decline in overall notice volumes and the number of buyers represented:

Reporting periodNoticesBuyersOpen noticesPublished GBP value
19–25 September2,8301,018490£203,102,320,263.48
26 September–2 October2,214876359£21,784,936,645.64
3–9 October2,075813317£47,102,718,561.014
10–16 October2,044769324£7,385,694,940.57

The latest period therefore continues the downward direction in total publications, while open notices interrupt their earlier decline. Their increase is worth monitoring, but the latest open count remains below those recorded in the first two periods shown.

Published value has followed a less consistent path, rising during 3–9 October before falling in the latest period. The supplied figures do not establish what caused those movements. Notice volume, buyer participation and opportunity status provide useful context alongside value, rather than leaving a single monetary total to define market direction.

Awards dominate the weekly mix

The latest seven-day coverage includes 1,561 awarded notices, compared with 1,555 in the preceding period. It also records one closed notice and two cancelled notices, against one and eight respectively in the previous seven days.

This award-heavy mix reinforces the need to separate market intelligence from live bidding activity. Awarded notices can help suppliers understand purchasing activity, but they should not be treated as invitations to tender. Equally, preliminary market engagement notices indicate an earlier procurement stage and require a different response from an open tender.

For procurement teams reviewing market activity, the headline count is therefore best read alongside status. The latest figures show fewer notices overall, a narrower buyer base and a modest increase in open notices—not a uniform movement across every category.

Friday provides secondary context

On 16 October, coverage recorded 399 notices from 232 buyers, including 80 open and 276 awarded notices. Total notice volume was 3.6% higher than the same weekday last week, when 385 notices were recorded from 237 buyers, including 77 open and 271 awarded notices.

That same-weekday increase provides useful secondary context, but it does not change the primary finding: publication volume across the rolling seven-day period was lower than in the immediately preceding seven days.

Sectors and buyers in the daily coverage

Within the 16 October sector breakdown, IT & digital recorded 39 notices. Professional services and construction & property each recorded 32, followed by transport with 25 and health & social care with 22. The broader “Other sectors” category contained 111 notices.

Hampshire County Council led the supplied daily buyer list with 30 notices, followed by Innovate UK with 11, Post Office Limited with eight, HOUSING 21 with seven and Surrey County Council with six. These are publication counts, not counts of live tenders or measures of purchasing value.

The daily notice-type breakdown also shows substantial post-award publication activity: 142 contract details notices on Find a Tender and 83 awarded contract notices on Contracts Finder. Alongside those were 62 tender notices and 31 preliminary market engagement notices on Find a Tender.

Source and data quality

This report uses the supplied verified procurement dataset dated 16 October 2026, including notices from Find a Tender and Contracts Finder. The primary comparison is the rolling seven-day period against the immediately preceding seven days; four-week history explains direction, and same-weekday figures provide secondary context.

Published values include only GBP values supplied in notices. Status counts and the listed sector, buyer and notice-type breakdowns should not be assumed to exhaust the total coverage. Geographic labels also vary, including England, United Kingdom, UK, UKJ36 and “Not supplied”, limiting straightforward regional interpretation.

Before committing resources, verify the original notice, including its current status, scope, value, deadline and submission or engagement instructions.
