UK procurement notices rise 6.9% over seven days

UK procurement activity increased in the rolling seven-day period ending 16 September 2026, with 2,102 notices recorded against 1,967 in the immediately preceding seven days. The supplied comparison shows a 6.9% increase.

Open notices rose from 409 to 444, extending the upward direction visible across the four-week history. However, the number of buyers moved from 823 to 817. The latest increase in notice volume therefore did not coincide with an increase in participating buyers.

Published values reached £61,762,393,029.66, compared with £14,055,649,602.39 in the preceding period. These totals include only GBP values supplied in notices. They should not be treated as a measure of money immediately available through live tenders.

Seven-day activity strengthens

The primary comparison covers 10–16 September against 3–9 September. Alongside the increase in open notices, awarded records rose from 1,276 to 1,412. Closed records fell from 73 to 27, while cancelled records increased from 22 to 26.

Awarded activity remains more numerous than open activity in the supplied seven-day coverage. For suppliers, that distinction matters: a larger overall notice count is not the same as an equivalent increase in competitions accepting bids.

The combination of rising open and awarded counts supports monitoring both current opportunities and purchasing outcomes. Open notices can inform immediate bid screening, while award records can help suppliers understand which buyers and requirements warrant further research.

Four weeks show different directions

The four-week history provides a clearer view than the latest value total alone.

Seven-day periodNoticesBuyersOpen noticesPublished GBP value

27 August–2 September1,419676222£20,842,540,055.64

10–16 September2,102817444£61,762,393,029.66

Notice volume fell in the second period before increasing in the following two. Open notices, by contrast, increased in every period shown, from 164 through 222 and 409 to 444.

Published value followed a different path: it fell across the first three periods and then rose in the latest week. The latest total remains below the £140,880,115,072.05 recorded for 20–26 August.

This divergence is important when interpreting the market. Counts indicate the volume of recorded activity, while published values reflect the amounts disclosed in the notices captured. Neither measure, on its own, establishes how much work is currently contestable.

Wednesday provides secondary context

The report-date coverage records 398 notices, compared with 381 on the same weekday last week. The supplied same-weekday comparison is 4.5%.

Open notices numbered 87, against 69 in the same-weekday comparator, while awarded records were 266, against 261. Buyer numbers were 260, compared with 270.

Published GBP values were £13,485,591,903.95, compared with £2,680,094,851.79 on the same weekday last week. This provides additional context, but the rolling seven-day comparison remains the principal measure of direction.

Sectors and buyers in focus

Within the report-date sector breakdown, health and social care recorded 48 notices. IT and digital and construction and property each recorded 33, followed by professional services with 18 and transport with 14. The broad Other sectors category contained 84.

The report-date buyer list was led by the Met Office, with 9 notices. Wolverhampton City Council and NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board each recorded 6. UK Research and Innovation and Surrey County Council each recorded 5.

These are report-date rankings, not seven-day sector or buyer growth measures. They identify areas for closer review without establishing that any named sector or buyer has increased activity over the week.

Distinguish tenders from other notices

The supplied notice-type breakdown includes 147 contract details notices on Find a Tender, 73 tender notices on Find a Tender, 57 records labelled “award, contract” and 41 contract award notices on Find a Tender. It also includes 29 preliminary market engagement notices and 8 tenderUpdate records.

Suppliers should distinguish these categories before committing bid resources. Pipeline and planned procurement notices signal upcoming requirements; preliminary market engagement notices concern an earlier engagement stage. None should automatically be treated as an invitation to submit a tender.

Source and data quality

This article uses only the verified ProcuraAxis dataset supplied for 16 September 2026, including coverage totals, four-week history and selected Find a Tender notices. No additional figures or percentage changes have been calculated.

Published value totals include only GBP amounts supplied in notices; they are not a complete valuation of all procurement activity. Notice counts should not be read as counts of distinct contracts.
