Why this procedure was chosen
Patients would have experienced delayed procedures, resulting in extended waits and increased 52 and 65 week breaches. Delays to planned treatment increase the risk of deterioration in patients' clinical condition, pain, anxiety and avoidable emergency admissions. The situation was not foreseeable due to an unforeseen issue with clinical staff. Alternative providers could not realistically mobilise within the required timeframe. Xyla was able to mobilise at pace based on prior experience and workforce availability. A competitive PSR process would have delayed mobilisation and resulted in longer patient waits, undermining NHS England recovery requirements, including progress against 52‑week and 65‑week waits.
